Fiberglass Crack, Hole, and Impact Repair in Chino

The short answer

OCRV Center repairs cracked, punctured, and impact-damaged fiberglass on RVs, fifth wheels, and specialty vehicles in our Yorba Linda shop, grinding back to sound laminate and rebuilding the panel with fresh glass and resin so the fix is structural, not cosmetic.

Ballpark: $1,500 to $20,000+

A spider crack at a corner or a hole from a thrown rock is more than a blemish. Fiberglass cracks travel under stress and let water into the laminate, so a surface patch usually fails within a season. At OCRV Center we open the damage, grind a tapered bevel back to solid material, and rebuild the panel layer by layer in our Yorba Linda shop before we ever touch the finish.

Damage we repair

Impact and stress damage on fiberglass and gelcoat panels shows up in a few recognizable forms, and each one needs a different approach. Hairline stress cracks at window corners and cap edges have to be chased to their end and stop-drilled so they cannot keep running. Punctures and gouges from road debris, low-clearance hits, or a backing accident need the surrounding laminate ground back until clean, dry glass is exposed.

We see this damage across motorhomes, fifth wheels, travel trailers, and specialty vehicles, on front and rear caps, sidewalls, fenders, and storage compartment doors. Because everything is done in shop, we can pull a panel into good light, sound it out for hidden separation, and scope the full repair before we quote it.

  • Stress and spider cracks at window, door, and cap corners
  • Punctures and gouges from road debris and low-clearance hits
  • Star cracks and impact fractures from backing and parking accidents
  • Crushed or caved sections on caps, fenders, and compartment doors
  • Cracks that keep reopening after a previous surface-only patch

How we rebuild the laminate

We do not fill a crack and paint over it. We grind a wide, tapered bevel around the damage so the new glass has a long bonding surface, then lay up alternating layers of fiberglass mat and cloth wet out with resin matched to the original panel, polyester or epoxy depending on the substrate. Each layer is rolled out to remove air, and on a structural area we build the laminate back to the original thickness or stronger.

Once the layup has cured we grind it flush, fill and fair with a compatible body filler, and block-sand the area dead flat. From there the panel moves to refinishing, where gelcoat or paint is matched and blended into the surrounding surface so the repair edge disappears.

  • Crack ends stop-drilled so they cannot keep traveling
  • Damage beveled back to clean, dry laminate for a long bond
  • Hand layup with mat and cloth in matched polyester or epoxy resin
  • Structural areas rebuilt to original thickness, then faired flat
  • Gelcoat or paint blended so the repair edge disappears
Questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you fix a crack without it coming back?+

Yes, when it is repaired correctly. A crack reopens when someone fills the surface but leaves the fracture live underneath. We stop-drill the ends, grind back to sound laminate, and rebuild the panel with new glass and resin so the repaired area is as strong as or stronger than the original, not just smoothed over.

Is a hole in my fiberglass repairable, or does the whole panel need replacing?+

Most punctures, gouges, and impact holes are repairable by rebuilding the laminate in place. We only recommend full panel replacement when the damage is too large to rebuild soundly or the panel structure behind it is compromised. We make that call in shop after we open and inspect the area.

Will the repair be visible after paint?+

Done right, no. We fair the rebuilt area flat, then match and blend gelcoat or paint into the surrounding panels and color sand the edge. The goal is a finish that reads as one continuous surface in both booth light and daylight.
