OCRV Center repairs cracked, rusted, and collision-damaged subframes on vans, motorhomes, and trucks at our Yorba Linda shop, cutting out failed sections and welding in new steel so the suspension, engine cradle, and body mounts carry their loads safely again.
The subframe is the bolted or welded structure that carries the engine cradle, suspension pickups, and body mounts, and when it cracks or rusts through, the loads it once spread start concentrating in the wrong places. We assess the damage against factory data, cut back to sound metal, and rebuild the section to spec. Every job is done in shop in Yorba Linda.
Common subframe failures we repair
Subframes fail in a few predictable ways. Front cradles on vans crack at the control-arm mounts after curb strikes and potholes. Rear subframe horns rot from road salt and trapped moisture, especially around drain holes and seams. Motorhome subframe transitions, where a cutaway chassis meets the house structure, flex and fatigue over years of loaded miles.
We separate cosmetic surface rust from true structural loss. Surface scale gets cleaned and treated, but metal that has perforated or lost its section gets cut out entirely. Patching over compromised steel just hides a load path that is no longer there, so we replace it rather than skin over it.
- Cracked control-arm and suspension mount repair on van cradles
- Perforated and rust-through section replacement at horns and seams
- Engine cradle and body-mount reinforcement
- Corrosion treatment and seam sealing to slow re-rusting
- Certified MIG and structural welding to factory weld patterns
How we rebuild a subframe section
After measuring the affected mounts against factory reference points, we support the structure so nothing shifts when the damaged steel is removed. We cut back to clean, full-thickness metal, fabricate or fit the replacement section, and weld to the original joint design so the load path is continuous again.
Once the steel is in, we re-verify the mount locations against the same reference points we started from, because a suspension pickup that is even slightly off will throw alignment and chew tires. We finish with corrosion coating and seam sealer so the repair lasts, then refinish as needed.
Frequently asked questions
Is a rusted subframe worth repairing or should I replace the vehicle?+
It depends on how much sound metal remains and where the rust is. Localized perforation at a horn or mount is usually a straightforward section replacement. Widespread rot through multiple load paths is a bigger decision. We inspect, separate surface rust from structural loss, and give you an honest call on whether a section repair makes sense for your van or coach.
Can a cracked van subframe be welded or does the whole subframe come out?+
Most cracks at control-arm and suspension mounts can be repaired by cutting back to sound steel and welding in a properly fabricated section that follows the factory joint design. Full subframe replacement is reserved for cases where the damage is too widespread to rebuild reliably. We measure the mounts first so the repair holds alignment.
Will subframe repair affect my alignment?+
It can, which is why we measure the suspension and body-mount locations before and after the repair. If the subframe carries a control-arm or strut pickup, we restore that point to its factory location so the alignment specs are achievable again. We confirm the mounts are true before the vehicle moves on to suspension or wheel work.
