Southern California sun is hard on fiberglass. Years of UV exposure break down the surface of the gelcoat, leaving it dull, chalky, and faded long before the panel itself fails. At OCRV Center we assess how much good gelcoat is left and restore the surface in shop, from a heavy cut and polish that brings back the original shine to a full refinish where the gelcoat is too far gone to save. ## What restoration corrects Restoration is about the surface, not structural damage. Oxidation turns gelcoat into a chalky film that comes off on your hand, fading flattens the color, and years of waxing and washing leave fine scratches and swirl. On older coaches the clear or gelcoat can craze into a fine network of surface cracks. These are cosmetic conditions, and most respond well to surface correction rather than replacement. We restore front and rear caps, sidewalls, slide-out faces, and trim on motorhomes, fifth wheels, trailers, boats brought to the shop, and other specialty fiberglass bodies. The first step is always to read the panel and tell you honestly whether it can be cut back to a healthy shine or whether the gelcoat is too thin and a refinish is the smarter spend. - Heavy oxidation and chalky, dead gelcoat surfaces - UV fading and flattened, washed-out color - Swirl marks, wash scratches, and dull, hazy panels - Crazing and fine surface cracks in old gelcoat or clear - Stubborn stains, water spotting, and exhaust streaking ## How we restore the surface When there is enough good gelcoat to save, we restore it rather than refinish it. We wash and decontaminate the panels, then cut back the dead oxidized layer with a graduated compound and machine polish, working from an aggressive cut down to a fine polish until the depth and gloss return. Where the original color is uneven, we feather the correction across the panel so there are no hard lines. When the gelcoat is too thin or crazed to bring back, we refinish instead. That means proper prep, primer where needed, and a fresh gelcoat or paint finish sprayed in our booth and color sanded to a deep, even gloss.
